The Thyroid Gland is an endocrine gland and it is located at the front of the neck, situated below the Adam’s Apple. It is a butterfly shaped organ and it comprises of two lobes, the left lobe and right lobe. The lobes lie on either side of the windpipe, and is connected by a narrow isthmus which is a strip of thyroid tissue. The isthmus is absent in some people, instead they have two separate thyroid lobes. It surrounds the cricoid and tracheal cartilages.
Thyroid hormones are secreted by the thyroid gland. These hormones control metabolism. Metabolism is the way that our body uses energy. The two main hormones secreted by the thyroid are
TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is released by the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus produces TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone. When the level of thyroid hormone is low, the hypothalamus produces a hormone called Thyroid Releasing Hormone or TRH and this hormone causes the pituitary gland to produce TSH or Thyroid stimulating Hormone.
Thyroid disorders are conditions that affect the thyroid gland. The function or structure of the thyroid are affected by different types of thyroid disorders.
